Stevensville board votes to formalize governance committee after debate over transparency

The vote followed an extended exchange in which several trustees questioned the committee’s purpose and whether it duplicated the work of policy, facilities and resource committees. One trustee said the new committee “has created, honestly, in some ways for me, more issues with transparency” and warned it could make some work “less touchable, less seeable.” Another trustee defended the committee’s work, noting it has been used to coordinate evaluations and provide the board greater continuity than one‑on‑one conversations.
Chair (speaker 1) argued the committee helps reduce siloing. “Any communication that’s done with a 3 person committee and superintendent is far healthier than a single board member having a conversation,” the chair said, arguing the group has improved board clarity on several issues. Trustees agreed the committee will meet when called and will report back to the full board; the motion to establish the governance committee as an official committee carried on a voice vote.
Supporters said the committee can speed up work that cuts across traditional committee lines, for instance issues that touch both policy and facilities or resource allocation, and noted the group has been working on evaluation materials that will be shared with the full board. Opponents said they wanted clearer notice and access to committee deliberations so the public and other trustees can follow the committee’s work.
The board did not change any committee policy language at the meeting; chair and trustees said the governance committee will continue to operate under the board’s standard committee framework and will bring reports and recommendations back to the full board for action. The board approved the change and placed the committee on the list of standing committees to show up on the district website and meeting listings.
