Key outcomes included adoption of Ordinance 2026-166 to amend Chapter 106 (vegetation) allowing assessment of additional administrative costs for repeat violations; authorization to apply for and accept a $199,720.80 State Homeland Security grant for equipment for the Dothan Police Bomb Team (Resolution 2026-172); approval to apply for $1,007,000 from the Bureau of Justice Assistance for drone-as-first-responder capabilities (Resolution 2026-176); and acceptance of up to $30,000 from the DOJ COPS program for law-enforcement mental-health and wellness (Resolution 2026-175).
The commission also approved an agreement with EarthCam to provide camera equipment and streaming for park events at no cost to the city, and authorized an amendment to Tyler Technologies for cashiering integration with an annual increase of $58,615 and a one-time cost of $70,540. Commissioners approved a membership to the Houston County Mayors Association and authorized applying for an Innovate Alabama Network Project grant.
In an added item, the commission approved Resolution 2026-186 to enter into a memorandum of understanding with Dothan City Schools to formalize use of school buses for city summer-camp field trips. City staff told commissioners the MOU will reimburse bus drivers and pay the state-approved rate of $1.60 per mile to cover fuel and wear-and-tear; staff said the city previously relied on a verbal agreement.
Several nuisance-abatement resolutions were approved, turning assessed abatement costs over to the county tax collector; a public commenter used the weed-abatement hearing to argue that enforcement is not uniform across properties, but commissioners did not change policy on the record.
