Governor Wentworth Regional School Board adopts FY2027 budget, backs warrant articles including amended health-oversight language

The Governor Wentworth Regional School Board unanimously adopted the FY2027 budget during its Jan. 5 meeting, approving the proposal after a public hearing and brief discussion of several line items.
Dr. James Manning moved to adopt the FY2027 budget as presented; Mr. Williams seconded and the motion passed 9–0. Board discussion highlighted increases in the Replacement Vehicles and Land & Building Improvements lines and noted that the proposed Student Wellness Coordinator position would include nurse supervisory duties.
Board Member Brodie Deshaies opened the Budget Adoption Hearing, reviewed enrollment trends, general fund and special education budget items, employee wages and benefits, proposed new staff, debt service, the Collective Bargaining Agreement recently negotiated by the district, revenue, and the default budget. Public commenter Stefanie King of New Durham asked that the district update current-year financials on its website, requested information on how universal meals funds are being used to date, and asked how the default budget is affecting students and staff.
Following the hearing, the board voted to support a slate of warrant articles read aloud by Superintendent Caroline Arakelian. The board recorded support votes for Articles 2–10. The board also amended Article 9 to add descriptive language “to improve health outcomes and oversee nursing and counselors,” then voted to support Article 9 as amended. The board later moved Article 9 to the position of Article 5 on the warrant and shifted subsequent article numbering accordingly.
Board members volunteered as spokespeople for warrant articles; among the dollar amounts associated with articles noted during the meeting were: Article 5 (Wellness Coordinator) — $135,000; Article 6 (Buildings & Grounds repairs/maintenance) — $200,000; Article 7 (Special Education Trust Fund) — $250,000; Article 8 (Maintenance Capital Reserve) — $50,000; Article 9 (Health Insurance Trust, amended) — $50,000; Article 10 (Universal Meals) — $250,000. The meeting materials indicate Article 1 and Article 11 are moderator items and required no board vote during this session.
The board assigned spokespeople for each warrant article and the School Board Clerk, Michelle Capone, will confirm voting locations and times with district towns ahead of the deliberative session. The board adjourned at 9:42 p.m.
