Board proclaims 'Books in Motion' month and recognizes Sikh Temple Bakersfield's 40th anniversary

The Kern County Board of Supervisors on July 14 proclaimed July as Books in Motion month, honoring a decade of a partnership between the county library and the Kern Dance Alliance that brings children's books to life through dance and gives away free books. Genevieve Igana, senior librarian with the Kern County Library, said the program helps kindergarten through third-grade readers and has prompted families to sign up for library cards after attending performances.
"For the last 10 years, we've given away 17,000 free books. We've served 22,000 children," a program speaker said as part of the presentation; organizers described 35 performances at county libraries this summer and partnerships that include local artists and sponsors.
The board also presented a certificate recognizing the 40th anniversary of the Sikh Temple Bakersfield (Wilson Gurdwara Saheb). Community leaders including Manpreet Kaur (vice mayor of Bakersfield) and representatives from the temple described the Gurdwara's role in community service, language and cultural education, and outreach.
The items were presented as proclamations and certificates and were adopted by unanimous voice vote.
