Middletown HR director: 43 vacancies on list, 14 expected to be filled within a month

Director Richardson, the city’s director of human resources, told the Common Council on April 7 that an updated vacancy report lists 43 open positions and that 14 of those are likely to be removed from the list within about a month.

"Of the new report, there are 43 positions listed," Richardson said, and she described a mix of recruitments underway across departments. She told the council the deputy director search received five applicants, two of whom she found qualified as of that afternoon, and that the Director of Public Works posting is open through April 15.

Richardson described the construction inspector position — brought to the council for a resolution on reclassification — as a technical role in the Public Works engineering division that has not been updated in roughly 21 years. "The purpose of the position is to inspect and coordinate the work of contractors, utility companies, subdivision developers, and city construction crews on road and bridge construction rehabilitation projects of complex nature and to ensure compliance," she said.

Other items Richardson cited as in-progress: a joint posting for two master mechanic vacancies (closing April 10), a recommended promotion for a heavy equipment operator, a truck-driver candidate in pre-employment screening, and a parks maintainer with a start date set for April 14. She said the Recycling and Sustainability Coordinator applications were under review and that some positions are expected to be filled before the city’s June budget process.

Council members thanked Richardson for the detailed update and asked about timelines for promotional approvals and interviews with the mayor’s office. Richardson said she expected interviews and final scheduling to be coordinated with the mayor’s office, with many hires completed before the end of the month where possible.

The workshop proceeded to other agenda items after the staffing update.
