Scott Staples, Farmington’s Highway Department supervisor, presented the department’s spring and summer plan to the selectmen on April 20, listing ditching, dirt‑road grading, culvert replacements, hot‑top pothole repairs, sidewalk and crosswalk maintenance (prioritizing school routes and the Tiger Trail), signage replacement and line striping.
Staples recommended finishing incomplete work on Reservoir Road, addressing trouble spots on Meaderboro and Sheepboro roads, replacing culverts on Ten Rod Road and other problem spots, and continuing routine roadside mowing and pothole patching. He recommended completing high‑priority pedestrian routes before other sidewalk repairs and noted some projects could be outsourced (striping, larger sidewalk repairs).
Staples said the department has been renting excavators and discussed whether to continue renting or acquire a rubber‑tire excavator. He also reported ongoing equipment repairs and maintenance needs, including a Freightliner with a broken leaf spring and a 1‑ton with starter issues. The board discussed coordinating with NHDOT District 6 paving schedules and ensuring contractor warranty items are resolved before paving.
Fleet purchase
Selectman John Scruton moved, and Ann Titus seconded, a motion to purchase two trucks from DiPrizio’s with funds to come from the Capital Reserve and authorize the Town Administrator to sign purchase documents. The motion passed 4‑0‑1 with Chairman Charlie King abstaining because he assisted in obtaining quote information. Jason Henry will work with Highway staff to confirm specifications and process the purchase.
Next steps
Staff will measure candidate paving sections and confirm with NHDOT District 6 whether proposed work overlaps state paving plans, obtain contractor scheduling, and return with costed lists of roads for final prioritization.
