Kane County commissioners unanimously accepted a $70,000 grant from the state Outdoor Recreation Initiative (ORI) to fund a double-vault toilet at the Sand Caves trailhead, with a $10,000 county match budgeted in the trails fund.
Taylor, trails staff, told the commission the county applied previously and was funded in the current round. He said the state contract vendors provide the toilet units and include most installation tasks, reducing separate procurement needs. The county expects to implement the facility before summer 2026 and is still finalizing the exact placement adjacent to the trailhead parking.
"We received a grant from ORI for $70,000 with $10,000 of matching funds for a double vault toilet at the Sand Caves trailhead," Taylor said.
Commissioners asked about ongoing maintenance and any recurring fees; staff said the structure is a one-time purchase and the agency will discuss maintenance responsibilities later. The board moved and unanimously approved accepting the grant and preparing the contract for review and signature.
