Healthy Kane County Foundation gives 2025 report and previews 2026 programs

Nick Laukus, executive director of the Healthy Kane County Foundation, presented the foundations annual report to the Kane County Commission and outlined programming planned for 2026.
Laukus said the foundation experienced a leadership transition in mid-2025 and scaled back a few events during the interim. Since July, the foundation restored several programs, including a kids triathlon paired with a safety night and a walking challenge across three elementary schools. Laukus described a helmet-rewards pilot that uses small gift certificates to encourage children to wear helmets.
"We brought back to life the kids' triathlon," Laukus said, noting the foundation also revised its bylaws to provide clearer operational guidance and program-selection criteria.
Commissioners asked about program audiences and data collection. Laukus acknowledged some instrumentation problems in the walking challenge (pedometers that reset), explained the decision to distribute funds equitably among participating schools this year and said the foundation will change measurement approaches for future challenges.
The presentation concluded with a calendar of planned events for 2026 and staff offered to provide a brief follow-up summary for the commission.
