Kane County Commission adopts $55.16 million 2026 budget

The Kane County Commission on Tuesday unanimously adopted Resolution 2025-42, approving a $55,161,009 county budget for fiscal year 2026.

County clerk and auditor Shamil Lam summarized late adjustments and line-item changes before the vote, saying the total budget was now $55,161,009 and the general fund portion totals $16,319,817. Lam identified increases for public safety, including a $65,000 allowance to support sheriff body-worn cameras, and additional funding to address wildland-fire costs that added roughly $80,000 to the plan. Lam also said the recorders office received a notable increase to preserve aging records and that a new KCYC coordinator fund consolidated spending previously scattered across other funds.

"Our total amount is gonna be $55,161,009," Shamil Lam said during the presentation.

Commissioners discussed several internal reallocations to cover the late costs without raising the overall total, including reducing a legal/technical contingency line and trimming miscellaneous non-departmental placeholders. Lam said the county corrected an earlier budgeting error by removing funds that could not legally be used from a TRCC fund and adjusted several fund balances and discretionary reserves accordingly.

After questions from commissioners about fund balances and whether certain line items were placeholders, the chair called for a motion. The commission voted "aye" and the resolution passed unanimously.

What happens next: County staff will publish the adopted budget and proceed with the approved appropriations for 2026. Lam said the county may open the budget if additional needs arise during the year.
