Conservation Commission plans $100,000 donation for Nelson Highlands preservation; board urges public hearing; War Memorial improvement proposal raised

Members of the Nelson Select Board discussed two community land and memorial matters at their March 24 meeting.
The Conservation Commission intends to donate $100,000 toward a preservation or acquisition project to be added to the Nelson Highlands and held by the Forest Society. Board members suggested the Conservation Commission hold a public hearing to present details and solicit town feedback; Brenna Kucinski said she would contact J. Yardley to recommend scheduling that hearing. The board took no formal vote to accept or allocate town funds toward the project during this meeting.
Also discussed was a proposal by Michael Blaudschun to create an enclosed planting area around the town’s War Memorial, which sits on the lawn of the Nelson Congregational Church. Board members raised separation of church and state concerns because the memorial is on church property. Don Carlisle suggested the church take the lead if funds are needed and noted concern they may lack resources; Blaudschun suggested a fundraiser as one option. Brenna Kucinski and Carlisle advised Blaudschun to consult with the church pastor for further guidance.
No town funds were committed at the meeting. The Conservation Commission donation plan will be the subject of a suggested public hearing to provide transparency and collect community input.
