Conservation Commission eyes new fund and possible $100,000 donation to 655-acre project

The Nelson Select Board discussed conservation funding proposals at its March 10, 2026 meeting after receiving an email from J. Yardley representing the Conservation Commission.
J. Yardley reported that the commission would like to expand the scope of the town's Milfoil Expendable Trust to cover other invasive species. Board members noted that because the account is a trust with a specific stated purpose, altering its use could require action under the cy pres doctrine and review by the Charitable Trust Division of the New Hampshire Department of Justice. The board suggested that creating a new fund for additional invasive-species work would be a simpler alternative.
The email also said the Conservation Commission is considering donating $100,000 toward a project, being developed by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and the Harris Center for Conservation Education, to conserve 655 acres across Nelson, Antrim and Hancock overlooking Nubanusit Lake. Brenna Kucinski said she will discuss these proposals further with J. Yardley and the commission and that they may share information with the public when plans are more developed.
No formal vote or transfer of funds was recorded. The board noted the trust-purpose question and the donation as items for future consideration.
