Plan to re-route road over Granite Lake Dam presented; board cautions town could bear costs without fixing dam

J. Cucchi presented the Select Board with a plan to re-route the roadway over the Granite Lake Dam, saying the change could improve traffic flow and the aesthetics of the area amid frequent logging-truck traffic into Stoddard.
Board members cautioned that while the proposed re-routing might ease traffic, it would not change the State’s listed condition of the dam and therefore would not by itself solve erosion or structural issues. M. Tarr told the board he could not confirm that current truck traffic is a substantial cause of the dam’s erosion. The Select Board said the town would likely bear the road-construction cost and recommended further discussion with the Granite Lake Village District, the Dam Commissioners and abutters before any decision.
Tarr also reported that the State Department of Transportation plans a spring site visit to evaluate the Bailey Brook Bridge and potentially make recommendations, and he said repairs to the town’s Peterbilt truck are ongoing and the vehicle remains out of service. The Select Board did not make a decision on the re-routing at the meeting and directed follow-up conversations with stakeholders and state officials.
