Volunteer appeals for one-night reinstatement; advocate praises dual-language program

Tony Sawyer appealed directly to trustees for a prompt decision to allow him to volunteer at Northeastern High School’s state football championship. “I gave you 17 years. I don’t want to miss this moment… I’m begging y’all. This is my last shot,” Sawyer said, asking the board to “have a heart” and allow him to attend and volunteer for one night.
Chair interrupted at the three-minute time limit and thanked Sawyer; the transcript does not record an immediate response or action by the board.
Elizabeth Shakin followed and described her advocacy and support for the district’s dual-language immersion program. She said the district’s strategic plan and budget transparency helped her advocacy and personal development: “Because of [Dr. Henry Johnson’s] encouragement…I am going to law school. I feel very humbled.” Shakin said she is a vocal supporter of the dual-language immersion program and thanked multiple district staff by name.
Both comments were part of the standard three-minute public comment period; neither speaker presented a formal request that produced an on-the-spot vote recorded in the meeting minutes.
