Commission approves roof replacement plan for Saint Mary’s Place

The Laurel Historic District Commission approved a certificate allowing roof replacements on four buildings at 114 Saint Mary’s Place.
Alexis Williams, Planner I with ECD, summarized the application and said the work would replace existing three-tab shingle roofing on the church, rectory, connector hallway and shed with 30-year architectural shingles. "The proposed replacement shingles will be a 30 year architectural" product and staff listed possible colors as charcoal slate, pewter gray or oyster gray, Williams said, noting that the final color selection will follow feedback from parishioners, the Archdiocese (ADW) and the HDC.
An applicant representative told the commission parishioners would be consulted and indicated a preference for charcoal to match the current roof and preserve the property’s historic character. A commission member moved to approve the certificate; another commissioner seconded and the motion carried on roll call.
Staff recorded the certificate number in the materials as HDCDashC20260089; the commission did not add conditions beyond the staff recommendation. The applicant will report the final color selection to the HDC prior to proceeding.
