State auditor honors Willoughby-Eastlake City School District; students celebrated for state track results

An Ohio Auditor of State representative presented the Auditor of State Award with Distinction to the Willoughby-Eastlake City School District during the board's July 13, 2026 meeting, praising the district's financial reporting and treasurer for a clean audit.
"My name is Tina Ludwig, and I am the Northeast Regional Liaison for Ohio Auditor of State Keith Faber," Ludwig said, presenting the award and noting that the distinction is given to fewer than 4% of audited entities. She singled out the district's finance office and Treasurer Nick Charnello for their "leadership, professionalism, and exceptional commitment to fiscal integrity."
Assistant Superintendent Pennington introduced Ludwig and framed the presentation as a recognition of the district's finance department and staff. The board received the award and then moved on to other agenda items.
Earlier in the meeting, Assistant Superintendent Pennington recognized student athletes who qualified for the Ohio High School Athletic Association state track meet. Pennington named individual placings — including a discus thrower who placed eighth with a listed mark and a south graduate who placed second in the seeded shot put — and identified members of the South High School relay teams. Pennington said the 4x200 relay set a new school record and improved that mark later in the season.
The award presentation and athlete recognitions were ceremonial items on the board agenda; no formal action was required to accept the auditor's award.
The board then continued with routine business, including financial approvals and personnel items. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Aug. 10, 2026, at 6 p.m. at the district administration building in Eastlake.
