Commissioners agree to abate bills for two residents after meter irregularities
Summary
Two Newfields residents reported incorrect January bills after meter installation or reader issues. The board found meters reading in 10-gallon increments instead of 100 and agreed to abate portions of both bills and have a meter specialist reconfigure and inspect deduct meters.

Two Newfields residents raised billing errors at the Feb. 11 meeting and the commission agreed to abate portions of their water and sewer bills pending meter reconfiguration.
James Gibbons told commissioners his January quarterly bill was incorrect; discussion revealed the home’s meter-reader button had been removed during siding work and he experienced a leak that he said he repaired. The board found the meter is reading in 10-gallon units rather than 100 and needs reconfiguration; they agreed to calculate and apply an abatement and issue a corrected bill.
Similarly, visitor Leland Thomasett reported his original meter had been installed backward and later corrected, and that the deduct meter is not reading at all. Commissioners again determined the meter is reading in 10-gallon increments and agreed to abate part of his bill. Treasurer Wendy Chase was directed to contact the district’s meter specialist, Hal Mapes, to reconfigure Thomasett’s meter and inspect the deduct meter.
No formal vote on the abatements was recorded in the minutes; the board instructed staff to calculate the abatement amounts and send corrected bills once calculations are complete. The commission also noted an equipment issue: the transducer on the water tower was not functioning and will be addressed by operations staff.
