The board voted unanimously to continue moving forward with a school-resource-officer (SRO) arrangement after a presentation on the proposed memorandum of understanding and budget impacts.
Devin (speaker 1) said he and the superintendent had been discussing an SRO for the school district since last May. AJ (speaker 8) described the role and benefits, saying the SRO would provide a daily presence in school, reduce calls that pull patrol officers from other duties, and provide coverage during the summer months. The presenter noted the district is prepared to cover roughly 73% of the officers salary and benefits under the current budget plan.
Board members asked about hiring and evaluation: AJ said recruitment would emphasize candidates with law-enforcement experience and that performance and review would be collaborative between the school and the police department.
A motion to continue the process of creating and hiring an SRO was made and seconded; the motion carried by voice vote, 5-0. Staff will continue drafting the MOU, clarify budget impacts and return with hiring steps.
