Drummond leaders continue outreach to fill vacant council seat; legal advice allows three‑member quorum

Mayor Gail Leeper told the council Jan. 21 that she and Council Member O'Dell have reached out to potential candidates for the town's vacant council seat and that the town has posted legal notices in the Philipsburg Mail seeking applicants.
Leeper said she contacted Attorney Thomas Jodoin of the Montana League of Cities and Towns for guidance on operating with a vacancy. According to the report to the council, Jodoin confirmed the town may proceed with municipal business while one seat remains unfilled; a majority of the council is two votes and the mayor may break tie votes when necessary.
No appointment or timeline to fill the vacancy was recorded in the meeting minutes. The council's next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 24, 2025, when further action on the vacancy could be taken.
