Superintendent Warfel told the Fayette County Schools board that the district will host a principal academy July 30–31 with presenters from outside the region to discuss artificial intelligence and its effects on public education.
Warfel said the presenters include experts from California who will address how AI may change future jobs and classroom instruction, and he singled out a planned session on suicide prevention, saying, “AI has helped people commit suicide,” and that the district needs to consider both the positive and harmful effects of the technology.
The superintendent said the academy will involve the 12 counties the district partners with through the EFC and that it is intended to bring professional-development dollars into the community. He framed the work as part of preparing students for changing career paths and as a chance to discuss “digital citizenship.”
The board did not take formal action on the academy during the meeting; Warfel invited board members to attend the training events.
The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for the 28th at 6:00 p.m. at the board office; the superintendent was asked to arrange a goal-setting work session in August outside a regular meeting.
