Residents report bird deaths near galvanizing site and safety issues on the Greenway

During the public-comment portions of the June 23 meeting, residents urged the council to investigate wildlife mortality near an AZZ galvanizing facility and to address safety on the Centennial Greenway.
Louita Buckles said she had observed dead birds, rabbits and squirrels on a walkway near the galvanizing site and asked the city for help investigating the cause and any necessary remediation. Buckles also mentioned a constituent unable to attend due to medical treatment and thanked the council for prior assistance.
Later in the meeting Jenny Littleton said a group of motorcyclists had been riding on the Greenway where children on scooters and bicycles use the trail; she described one near-miss in which a child had to exit the trail to avoid a motorcycle. Littleton also reported an individual repeatedly shouting late at night on the trail and asked whether the pavilion next to several homes could be moved farther from residences. Council members said they would alert Great Rivers Greenway and coordinate with police on enforcement and possible trail access changes.
No formal votes were taken on these requests during the meeting; council directed staff to follow up with appropriate agencies and to explore options that could include site visits and communication with property owners and trail managers.
