Volunteer coaches and program leaders told the MSD Shakamak Schools board that the district’s limited gym availability is constraining the youth Biddy Bowl program and asked the board to work with the athletic director to create more usable practice and game time.
"We're having to run 45 minute long [sessions] — get one game from kindergarten to second grade," said Tyler Richardson (speaker 8) during the public comment period, describing how multiple teams and back-to-back games leave little or no warm-up time. Mounted schedules, he said, force volunteers to run late into the evening and reduce instructional value.
Multiple volunteers and board members confirmed large participation numbers — speakers estimated between 75 and more than 100 children participate — and described conflicts when volleyball, school practices and tournaments occupy the same gym time. One board member said the logical first step was to meet with Dylan, the athletic director, to seek a coordinated schedule.
Board members and volunteers agreed to meet with the athletic director to try to find a workable split of gym time so younger players can warm up and coaches can run meaningful practices rather than compressed games. No formal policy change or vote on facilities scheduling occurred at the meeting.
The board thanked volunteers for their work and asked staff to report back on the meeting with the athletic director.
