Paducah riverfront project nears completion; city eyes September grand opening

City manager Cindy Clark updated the Paducah Board of Commissioners on July 14 on progress at the riverfront redevelopment project, saying substantial construction is complete and finishing work is underway.
Clark walked commissioners through photographs comparing April conditions to work completed last week: seat walls, pavers, landscaping, the grand staircase at the foot of Broadway and the Port of Paducah letters are in place; pier pilings and fenders have been set and crews are preparing handrail posts. She said the commons area should see last finishing touches by the end of July, the Excursion Pier and Plaza by the end of August, and the planned grand opening is scheduled for September.
Clark noted contractors had installed irrigation and sodded the amphitheater, placed picnic tables near the Transit Boat dock and completed the Compass Rose centerpiece. She said a structural engineer was impressed by the pier design and construction and that the city is coordinating plantings, furnishings and final site amenities.
When asked about the first cruise ship, Clark said she believed the first scheduled call was in October but did not specify a date; commissioners suggested coordinating a city welcome for the arrival.
Clark closed by thanking staff and contractors and said the project is "really starting to look like these beautiful pictures that we've had so far."
