Canton Public School District board approves $75,000 security contract, multiple hires and personnel actions

Canton, Miss. — The Canton Public School District Board of Trustees on April 14 approved a package of operational and personnel measures including a district access-control contract, multiple staff recommendations for the 2026–2027 school year, and several grants and donations.
The board voted unanimously to accept a bid from Security Services for an access-control system for the district, not to exceed $75,000. The approval was part of a motion by Mr. Peter Brown, seconded by Mr. Lenderrick Taylor; all trustees — Mr. Johnny Brown, Mr. Lenderrick Taylor, Dr. Jacqueline Griffin and Mr. Peter Brown — recorded Aye votes.
The board also approved the superintendent’s report items, which included a school-improvement update presented by Porter Middle School Principal Henry Doyle and an NJROTC program update noting conversion to the Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC). The board approved items 7.1–7.6 as a block.
Financial business included approval of multiple claims dockets (Claims Docket #28744–28892 and related dockets), ratification of payments, approval of disposals of fixed assets, the activity fund report for March 2026 and monthly financial statements. Tony Foster presented the financial report; the board approved items 9.1–9.7 unanimously.
Under agreements and contracts, trustees approved two memoranda of understanding with the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) to place Kyree Freeman and Patricia Frazure as Educators in Residence to serve as K–5 math coaches in district elementary schools. The board also approved consent-agenda items including a $2,700 donation from BankPlus to the Canton Career Center; two separate $250 donations to Goodloe Elementary to assist with 5th-grade transportation costs; submission of an Accelerate MS EquipMS grant application to support equipment for the Advanced Manufacturing Program at the Canton Career Center; air-filtration services not to exceed $15,000; purchase of floor-cleaning equipment not to exceed $22,000; and equipment purchases for the Automotive Mechanics and Automotive Body Repair programs in an amount not to exceed the MDE Enhancement Equipment Grant total of $26,345.
The board approved multiple student transfers for 2026–2027 (items 11.13.1–11.13.9), noting in each case that the student’s parent is employed by the Madison County School District.
A broad personnel packet passed by motion, including leaves of absence for multiple employees, resignations effective June 2, 2026 for several teachers and one custodian, the retirement of a custodian effective June 30, 2026, and recommended hires across Reuben B. Myers CSAS, Canton Elementary, Goodloe Elementary, McNeal Elementary, Nichols Middle School, Canton High School and the athletic department for the 2026–2027 school year. Examples of approved contracts include teacher appointments commencing July 27–29, 2026 and ending June 2, 2027, and coaching appointments for the athletic department for the 2026–2027 school year.
The board voted to enter executive session to consider personnel matters. After returning to open session, Chair Johnny Brown announced the board accepted Interim Superintendent Dwight J. Luckett Sr.’s recommendation to release an employee from contract. The release was approved unanimously.
The board adjourned after completing its business. The next regular meeting is scheduled for May 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Canton High School.
