Canton school board approves RFPs for 2026–27, tables proposed extension of elementary day

The Canton Public School District Board of Trustees on May 12 voted to advertise two requests for proposals for the 2026–2027 school year and deferred a proposal to lengthen elementary school dismissal.

Mr. Lenderrick Taylor, vice-chair, moved to advertise RFP 2027-01 for instructional supplies and software and RFP 2027-02 for instructional support services; Mr. Peter Brown, trustee, seconded the motion, which passed with all trustees voting Aye. The district will publish the solicitations to seek vendors for curriculum materials and support services for the upcoming school year.

The board also considered item 8.3, a proposal to extend the elementary student dismissal time from 2:20 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. effective the 2026–2027 school year. Mr. Taylor moved to table the item; Mr. Brown seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The minutes record the item was tabled pending further information; the board did not adopt a new dismissal time at the May 12 meeting.

The actions were part of a broader consent and discussion block that included the superintendent’s monthly reports and other routine approvals. The board did not record substantive public debate about the dismissal-time proposal in the minutes; two members of the public had earlier requested that concerns be heard in executive session but the minutes do not link those requests to the dismissal-time item.

Next steps: the district will proceed with advertising the two RFPs; the dismissed extension will return to the board for future consideration if staff bring it back to the agenda.
