The Canton Public School District Board of Trustees met in a special call session on March 24, 2026, at the Canton Career Center and approved a package of administrative and personnel actions while tabling a proposed salary-scale adoption.
The meeting was called to order by Mr. Johnny Brown at 4:30 p.m., and the board unanimously approved the agenda after a motion by Mr. Peter Brown and a second from Dr. Jacqueline Griffin. Superintendent Dwight J. Luckett Sr. reported an appraisal from Robert Cook for Section 34, Township 09N, Range 02E, comprising about 5.13 acres, and provided an update on a memorandum of understanding with Nissan; trustees approved both items by motion.
Trustees voted to renew the district’s worker’s compensation policy with Bridgefield Indemnity Insurance Company, effective March 28, 2026, through March 28, 2027. They also approved the FY 2026–2027 assurances intended to sustain the Advanced Manufacturing Program at the Canton Career Center.
On staffing and instructional adjustments, the board approved hiring Charlene Fountain as a part-time Early Literacy Intervention Tutor to provide six weeks of phonemic awareness and phonics instruction to Pre-K and Kindergarten students at Reuben B. Myers CSAS and McNeal Elementary School for a stipend of $5,000. The board also approved using Monday, April 6, 2026, as a make-up day for the virtual instruction day held March 2, 2026, “as required by MDE,” and retroactively approved Kristi Marshall as an afterschool teacher at Porter Middle School effective March 17, 2026.
The board discussed the Mississippi School Boards Association Employee Salary Scale and Supplements. A motion by Mr. Peter Brown, seconded by Dr. Jacqueline Griffin, approved items 5.1–5.6 but explicitly tabled item 5.7 — the formal approval of the MSBA salary scale — for future consideration.
All recorded motions at the meeting carried with affirmative votes from Mr. Johnny Brown, Mr. Lenderrick Taylor (via phone), Mr. Peter Brown and Dr. Jacqueline Griffin.
