Peletier board hears county won’t provide routine animal-control services without payment

Town staff updated commissioners Oct. 28 that Carteret County staff indicated the county will not provide routine animal-control services to the town without charging for personnel costs.
Staff member (speaker 9) said he contacted the county attorney to request assistance and was told the county could provide services only if the town paid the personnel cost or hired its own personnel. "Essentially what they're telling us is that they're not going to...dig resources out anyway," the staff member said, adding the county typically contracts with a humane-society provider for animal services.
Commissioners discussed low-cost local options, including purchasing animal cages that residents can check out from town hall for temporary holds and relying on the county for dangerous or rabies cases. One commissioner said other small towns in the area keep basic cages and call the county for serious matters. No formal contract or expenditure decision was recorded; the board agreed to explore buying cages and to follow up on potential local solutions.
