Board discusses calendar waiver and earlier start to accommodate high-school transition

A district staff presenter summarized parent, teacher and leadership feedback on next year’s school calendar and previewed a potential state calendar-waiver route that could permit an earlier start date to allow the district to finish earlier and speed the transition into the new high school.

The presenter said the most common stakeholder requests were: more teacher workdays distributed through the year, avoiding Monday start dates, and finishing the school year earlier to facilitate the building move. To pursue an earlier start under state rules, the district must demonstrate that in four of the past 10 years it was out of school for at least eight days (the days need not be consecutive). Staff said they have documentation and will verify those records.

Options to achieve an earlier end date include adding time to each school day or shifting the start date by a couple of days. The presenter said staff will meet with the parent advisory team and teacher advisory committee, then return in February with three drafts: one that assumes the waiver is granted, a traditional calendar that meets legislative start/end requirements, and a calendar that shortens the year by adding instructional time to the day.

Board members asked about whether waivers must be re-applied in future years and were told a waiver request would need to be made each year it’s sought. The item was provided for information tonight; any calendar adoption or waiver application will return to the board for action.
