Pamlico County Board unanimously approves district and school strategic plans

The Pamlico County Board of Education voted Nov. 4 to approve the district strategic plan and each of the four school improvement plans after presentations from district staff and school teams.

Superintendent Dr. Johnson and district presenters summarized the district plan (drafted in 2022) and its alignment with State Board of Education goals through 2025. The plan centers on four priorities — post‑graduation pathways, proficiency, stakeholder participation and professional development — and highlights that the Class of 2024 cohort graduation rate rose to 94.4 percent (reported as of May 2024).

Individual school teams presented school‑level goals and actions. Adrienne Turner, a kindergarten teacher at Pamlico County Primary School, outlined math proficiency targets (kindergarten 100%, first 70%, second 75%, third 65%) and a reading proficiency checkpoint of 70% in November. Fred Anderson presenters described plans to raise fourth‑to‑fifth‑grade proficiency through targeted interventions; the middle school reported a reduction in discipline referrals this year and described measures to sustain engagement; and Christine Wayne, high‑school improvement chair, outlined proficiency and ACT/work‑readiness targets and daily tutorial plans.

After questions from board members, a motion to approve the district plan and all four school plans was moved, seconded and carried by voice vote.

The board directed staff to post the approved goals to the district site and to add the plans to guest logins within about two weeks so administrators can begin tracking progress.
