Kewaunee’s Common Council on Jan. 13 adopted Resolution No. 2025-2051 to allow individuals 18 years of age to join the fire department as junior firefighters under an apprenticeship-style program.
Staff said interested students would enroll in training at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) and receive on-site field training with the local fire department. The program is not paid; it operates as an apprenticeship with required parental waivers and insurance notifications for worker-compensation coverage.
"These students would essentially enroll in firefighter training through NWTC and authorized through an apprenticeship program that's authorized by the schools and local schools," Keith explained, adding that the guidelines include waivers and insurance notifications to limit liability exposure.
Council voted to adopt the guidelines; staff said the effort is part of recruitment and workforce development for the department.
