The Wausau Common Council opened its July 14 meeting with several community recognitions. Mayor Doug Denny read a proclamation marking the 100th anniversary of the Wausau chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and declared July 19, 2026 the chapter’s centennial celebration day; Catherine Sparks, chapter regent, thanked the council and invited the public to a Sunday reception at the Marathon County Historical Society’s Woodson Center.
The mayor also proclaimed the AirVenture Cup Race Weekend in Wausau and invited residents to the airport open house and finish-line events; an EAA chapter representative described broad national and international participation and said roughly 120 aircraft were expected. Finally the council presented a certificate of achievement to Hazel Schaeffer, recognizing her as the chapter’s 2.5 millionth Young Eagles applicant and noting her flight at Oshkosh on July 22, 2026.
Councilors and guests emphasized the community value of volunteer service, historic preservation and aviation programs that engage youth.
