The Downtown Development Authority for the City of Bessemer on May 6 approved a package of small procurements and budget changes and authorized payments tied to ongoing projects.
The board voted to spend up to $3,400 to buy 42 highway banners from Rapid Grafiks, a motion that passed on roll call with all present members voting yes and two members absent. Members also approved the financial report and a set of budget amendments the board said were presented as part of routine year-end adjustments.
On project work, the board approved a $995 change order to Ruotsala’s Construction for two additional sidewalk portions related to the new pickleball court; meeting materials noted concrete would be poured on May 11, 2026 and fence installation was scheduled for May 18, 2026. The board approved a $105 invoice to Efficiency Kings for a furnace repair at the Bessemer Heritage Center.
The board amended the lease dates for the Bessemer Area Historical Society to run Jan. 1, 2026 through Dec. 31, 2026 and asked that society representatives attend the next DDA meeting to discuss the arrangement. Several routine items were listed as received with no action, including an event trailer update and a roof condition discussion for the historical society building.
The meeting closed after a brief public comment period; board members said they will return with a proposed winter parking policy for the DDA-owned lot so plowing and towing can be enforced if vehicles remain abandoned.
