Superintendent: Community Foundation‑funded grants liaison returned about $1 million to Polk County Schools

John Baldwin, superintendent, told the Polk County School Board that a Community Foundation–funded grants and community partnerships coordinator position has produced a large return on a relatively small local investment.

"Since we have put that position in place, we've had $1,000,000 in grants that we've gone out, found, and received, and implemented," Baldwin said, describing the role as a liaison between the district and donors that helps find and manage grant opportunities. He said the district budgets roughly $60,000 a year for its share of that position and that the role also produces a monthly grants newsletter to target funding opportunities to relevant teachers and programs.

Baldwin named Ronette Deel as the earlier incumbent and said George Alley is the current lead working with the Polk County Community Foundation. He credited the position with enabling partnerships that otherwise would be difficult for the district to manage, citing examples including an Anatomage medical table for the high school and a roughly $350,000 grant obtained through Community Foundation coordination.

Baldwin summarized the coordinator's duties as locating prospects, partnering on applications, assisting with implementation and ensuring fidelity on reporting and bookkeeping.

"For around a $60,000 a year investment in our school system, that's what our kids are getting back," he said, urging board members to recognize the foundation and staff when opportunities arise.

Board members responded with thanks to the foundation and staff. Baldwin also asked board members to meet with Sarah Bell and Community Foundation staff to express appreciation for the ongoing partnership.
