Staff outlines options and high costs for rejoining regional vocational-technical district

Rajan said Nashoba Valley Tech and several other nearby districts are not pursuing membership expansion because of high enrollment demand from existing member towns. Minuteman Regional Technical School indicated it would discuss membership but requires negotiation of admission terms and a capital buy-in plus proportional operating assessments. Rajan said membership would require the town to be prepared to fund capital and assessment obligations.
Board members asked staff to quantify recent out-of-district tuition and transportation costs and to determine whether any Boxborough students have been denied access to VOTEC programs due to space constraints. Staff reported town spending on vocational placements (tuition, transportation and assessment) was roughly $156,000 for the current fiscal year and about $213,000 the prior year; over three recent years total outlays reached about $500,000. Members asked for a clearer demand estimate from schools and guidance counselors before making a policy recommendation.
