Savannah Alexander, principal of Pamlico Primary School, told the board that after district professional development and completion of curricula implementation, the school’s wildly important goal (WIG) is to raise oral reading fluency to 70% by Thanksgiving. Alexander cited last year’s DIBELS results — record kindergarten proficiency and third‑grade growth more than 10% above the state average — as evidence the approach is working. "We are ready to rock," she said, describing curriculum and text choices that add cultural and factual content to reading lessons.
Sharon Carter Moore, principal of Fred Anderson Elementary School, said open house attendance was strong (88%) and that the school is emphasizing attendance with weekly classroom recognition. She thanked community partners and volunteers who provided backpacks, supplemental meals and after‑school programs.
Joshua Gaskell, the new principal at Pamlico County Middle School, said his leadership team’s WIG is to reduce discipline incidents by about 50% compared with last year; he thanked custodial and support staff and local volunteers helping the media center.
Becky Lanchy, principal at Pamlico County High School, described a focus on instructional consistency and expectations across classrooms and noted the school was designated a "B" school in the state’s accountability data for the first time since 2018; she said the school is aiming to reach an "A" rating.
The superintendent and board praised the principals’ reports, and the board cited the presentations as evidence of early momentum as the district begins the school year.
