Board awards bids for fire-system, roof and kitchen-hood projects; kitchen hood work budgeted at $250,000

Facilities staff presented a bid tabulation for a full fire-system replacement at Polk County High School; two bids were received and the low bidder (identified in the tabulation as 137 Fire Security) was recommended. The board approved awarding the contract and funding it from the repair-and-renovation budget.
The board then considered an annex-roof replacement at TriNet Elementary School. Staff reported three bids with Greer Roofing the apparent low bidder; two bidders declined to price the gutter and downspout portion, requiring separate contracting for that scope. The board approved the roof project and associated repair-and-renovation funding.
Finally, staff described complex kitchen-hood projects at Polk Central Elementary and Tron Elementary that require rooftop penetrations and hookups to electrical and fire-suppression systems. Denver Equipment submitted turnkey bids (about $73,000 for Polk Central and $77,820 for Tron); staff recommended the turnkey approach after receiving only limited bidder responses. A board member warned of operational risk if work is not completed: "If we don't get these projects done, we may have to be forced to shut down on cafeterias," and the board approved a $250,000 appropriation for the kitchen projects 7–0.
The board also approved repair-and-renovation lottery applications for Northcott School to be forwarded to county commissioners and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
