Board approves CEP meal coverage despite $50,000–$75,000 projected net cost

The Polk County Board of Education voted 7–0 to adopt the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) arrangement for grouped elementary schools and to roll over food-service contracts for the coming year, despite staff estimates of a district-funded net cost.
During presentation staff explained that grouping the four elementary schools increased participation and reimbursement, producing a net estimate the district would need to cover of approximately $50,000–$75,000 to provide free breakfast and lunch systemwide. "You're looking at probably somewhere between 50 and $75,000 that we would have to come up with to have every student eat free breakfast and lunch," a board member said while describing the district calculation.
Presenters noted the CEP decision depends on federal rules and cautioned the federal government could change eligibility. "There was talk about if every school in your district is not over 60%, then you don't even qualify," a board member said; another added, "the federal government could pull the rug from under us and not offer this program or restrict it greatly."
Staff also reported on food-service procurement: most vendors agreed to roll over contracts and the produce supplier (Cisco) will be rebid; one staff speaker noted an increase of about $4.06 per case under current terms. The board approved the CEP adoption and contract rollovers by unanimous vote.
