The Polk County School Board authorized administration to accept the recommended bidder for the district’s pre‑K playground RFP and to enter formal engagement with that vendor.
Dr. Schweitzer told the board the RFP sought to demolish and rebuild playgrounds at Polk Central, Sunnyview and Saluda and that the district aimed to accomplish the work for $500,000 or less by reusing materials and refining designs. "Our winner was Great Southern Recreation company out of Tennessee," he said, and the board was asked to approve moving forward with that contractor.
Board members confirmed the projects are funded with grant money and that no local general‑fund dollars were required for the work; one member noted the state waived a typical 20% non‑federal match on the federal funding involved. The motion to accept the bid and engage Great Southern Recreation passed on a unanimous 7‑0 vote.
Next steps will be contract finalization with the vendor and design refinement before demolition and rebuild schedules are set and contractors mobilized.
