Mayor highlights redevelopment interest for former high school site, council backs town role in June 28 fireworks

Mayor Larry D. Yates updated the council on local redevelopment and community events during the May 6 meeting. He said the former Haysi High School site presents an "engineering opportunity" and that Matthew Owens of Black Diamond Gym has expressed interest in using the site for a gym and possibly other businesses, including a restaurant. Mayor Yates also noted ongoing work at Vier’s restaurant and said original high school plans had been scrapped.
The mayor announced plans for the annual E&S Grocery and Edwards family fireworks event on June 28, 2025, and said organizers were seeking volunteers and financial supporters; Haysi Supply had committed a donation and county support was likely. Vice Mayor Michael Harris moved and Council Member William “Billy” Counts seconded a motion to allow the town to be involved in the event; the motion passed unanimously by verbal vote.
Council members asked about the new town hall construction, and Mayor Yates said the foundation looked good and that the Corps of Engineers had paid for a new waterline. Council Member Susan Tiller attributed lower participation in the recent townwide cleanup to rainy weather. The council also noted that community leaders continue monthly meetings.
