Haysi Council approves $250 donation to support library summer reading program

Sarah Rose, representing the Haysi Community Library, asked the Town Council on May 6 for financial support for the library’s Summer Reading Program and presented flyers outlining the program and activities.
The council approved a $250 donation to cover prizes, with Council Member Carter Branham moving and Council Member William “Billy” Counts seconding the motion. Council Members Debbie Wood, Carter Branham, Billy Counts and Vice Mayor Michael Harris voted in favor; Council Member Susan Tiller abstained.
Rose said last year’s Summer Reading saw strong participation and the library anticipates higher turnout this year—"about eighty to one-hundred children attending the program"—with arts and crafts centered on the program’s “Color Our World” theme. The donation, she said, would ensure every participating child receives a prize for taking part.
Mayor Larry D. Yates and council members thanked the library staff for its programming and community outreach. The donation will be processed through town channels as recorded in the motion.
