Mission EDC announces downtown grants, new EV chargers and $50M recycling plant groundbreaking

Mission Economic Development staff, standing in for Teclo Garcia, updated the council Tuesday on several business and economic-development initiatives aimed at downtown revitalization and job growth.
The department awarded seven downtown assistance grants totaling $150,000 for façade, signage and equipment projects to businesses including Conway Food Mart, Deluxe Events and Mission Boot Shop. “We were able to award seven businesses with a total of $150,000 in grant funding to uplift our downtown area,” the presenter said.
Staff also reported activation of two universal electric‑vehicle chargers at The Seed—the first such chargers in southern Hidalgo County. The chargers use a $5 initial connection fee and a per‑kilowatt‑hour charge (about $0.40/kWh); usage varies by charge time, staff said.
On industrial investment, staff announced a $50 million recycling plant (Zaluma Sustainable Aluminum / Century Recycling) will break ground July 28 at 9 a.m.; council members were invited to attend. The department also highlighted the near completion of the mission‑ready internship program (15 interns placed) and a resident scholarship at South Texas College available to Mission residents (application deadline July 31).
Council members asked about EV-charger costs and the presenter explained typical user fees and variability based on charge time. Staff characterized the announcements as evidence of business growth and said sales-tax activity is up year‑over‑year.
