Mission proclaims Parks and Recreation Month; Speedy 5K organizers thank city for support

A parks and recreation representative read a proclamation at Tuesday’s Mission City Council meeting declaring July 2027 as Parks and Recreation Month, highlighting the role of parks, playgrounds and programs in community health and quality of life.
The representative told the council the proclamation recognizes staff and volunteers who keep parks operating and singled out Parks & Recreation staff and advisory board members present at the meeting. “Parks and recreation activities and leisure experiences provide opportunities for young people to live, grow, and develop,” the presenter said while reading the proclamation text.
Later, a representative of the Speedy Moore Foundation thanked the council for partnership on the 7th annual Speedy 5K, saying the event drew more than 2,300 participants and raised $50,018.18 in 2026 for law-enforcement scholarships (bringing the foundation’s total awarded to about $190,000). The organizer asked the city to work with TxDOT to explore temporarily closing both northbound lanes of Sherry Road during the race to improve runner safety; the organizer said the foundation will continue contingency planning for parking and thanked H-E-B for offering overflow parking.
Council members voiced appreciation for parks staff and for the Speedy 5K’s community and economic impacts. The council approved the proclamation by unanimous voice vote and joined honorees for a group photograph.
