New Philadelphia board salutes state‑level spring athletes, awards Dave Milburn scholarship

The New Philadelphia Board of Education on July 3 recognized an unusually successful spring sports season at New Philadelphia High School and presented the Dave Milburn scholarship to three student‑athletes.

The principal of New Philadelphia High School praised athletes for winning state, district and league titles and for their sportsmanship. The principal said the season included "state champions, regional runner‑ups, district champions, and league champions," and noted multiple athletes earned Academic All‑Ohio honors. He singled out track coach Jeremy Rogers as OCC coach of the year and listed student accomplishments across track, baseball and softball.

The board also presented the Dave Milburn award, a scholarship honoring the late coach David Milburn and given for leadership and dedication to the team. Gary Gautas, who presented the award, described Milburn's work teaching successful programs in the late 1960s and said the scholarship recognizes effort, leadership and commitment over multiple years. The presenter announced the scholarship winners as Marcus Adelman, Alec Catalan and Wyatt Landon.

The honors covered a wide range of teams and individual achievements. Among the college‑and state‑level achievements mentioned: Marcus Adelman (state champion in the 3,200, Academic All‑Ohio), Wyatt Landon (state champion in the 1,600 and Eastern District runner of the year), and numerous athletes who qualified for regional or state competition and earned OCC or district awards. Baseball and softball players were recognized for all‑conference and district selections, and several student‑athletes were named to all‑district teams.

Chair thanked the students and coaches for their representation of the Quaker community and noted attendees could leave after the recognition portion of the meeting.

The meeting continued with additional business following the awards presentation.
