Polk County Board approves budget items, playground grant extension and high school paving

On the Head Start award, Superintendent Green described the item as "a request for a no cost extension ... in the amount of $460,000" to allow the district time to replace preschool playgrounds before the grant period closes.
On the paving project, Dr. Schweitzer said the district rebid the job and recommended the apparent low base bidder, Tar Heel Paving; the board approved the recommendation 6-0 with one member absent.
The board also adjusted the school calendar to recoup recent missed classroom days by reassigning an annual leave day and two workdays to January dates, a change administrators said is intended to meet state instructional-hour requirements.
The board concluded regular business and voted to meet in closed session to discuss personnel matters.
