Polk County Schools reports roughly $460,000 in storm damage from Hurricane Helene; Saluda bank/retaining wall singled out

An administrator gave the board an initial facilities impact assessment following Hurricane Helene, estimating nearly $460,000 in cumulative damage across district properties.
“We're looking at a rough estimate of about $460,000 worth of damages total,” the administrator said, adding that while the total is significant it is far less than damages reported in neighboring counties.
Saluda Elementary sustained some of the most serious damage: sinkhole and landslide activity near mobile units, a degraded bank behind a two‑story rock building and storm‑exacerbated drainage problems. District staff estimated about $200,000 to engineer and construct a retaining wall (roughly 50–75 feet long) to stabilize the bank near Seminary Street; administrators said the Department of Transportation, FEMA and the district’s insurers were involved in determining responsibility.
Roof leaks, a small sinkhole at the baseball fields, localized gym ceiling and awning damage, and asphalt disturbances at Sunnavi Elementary were also noted. The district reported some food‑service losses (roughly $20,000 in spoiled freezer inventory) and said it is seeking reimbursement from county partners and grant foundations for operational losses and that FEMA application work had begun.
Administration emphasized contingency planning: critical operational repairs were prioritized and larger engineering work will follow pending insurance, FEMA and DOT determinations. The board accepted the facilities report and asked administrators to continue documentation and pursue appropriate reimbursements and reimbursements from insurers and grantors.
