USC Beaufort asks delegation to endorse recurring and one-time appropriations for growth, convocation center

University of South Carolina Beaufort officials updated the Beaufort County legislative delegation on enrollment, capital needs and recurring funding requests and secured a motion of support for formal delegation backing.
Dr. Panot (USCB) said the university has record headcount enrollment (speaker cited a headcount of 21,188 and an entering freshman class of about 553) and the highest full-time-equivalent (FTE) the institution has had. He told members the convocation center project has accumulated state funding commitments totaling roughly $37 million and that the campus is seeking recurring and one-time appropriations to support program growth and facilities, including an environmental engineering program request and housing investment for the Hilton Head campus.
In response, a delegation member moved that USCB submit detailed recurring and one-time appropriation requests to the delegation staff and asked that the delegation consider a resolution to transmit the university’s request to the trustees and governor’s office early in the budget cycle. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Members pressed for timeline clarity and asked the university to return with specific cost figures; university staff said they would return to the delegation by the end of the year with specific numbers and plans for authorizations. Delegation members also raised maintenance needs for campus facilities such as the CFA and marine science buildings.
