Finance committee recommends fee referrals, defaults business-license late filing to $30 and sets late-penalty floor

The Finance Committee met Aug. 27 and reviewed the municipal fee schedule carried forward from the August Town Council meeting. Committee members recommended referring private waste disposal and pre-treatment charges to the Infrastructure Committee for further review.
The committee recommended keeping the business-license late-filing fee at $30 and changing the business-license late-payment penalty to a minimum of $30 or 10%, whichever is greater. The committee also recommended leaving the attorney fee for unpaid tax assessment at $500 and setting the bad check fee at $25.
Committee members assigned research tasks to prepare for code changes: Jim Meier will research recreational vehicles and zoning code violation fees; Joan Collins will research subdivision and town park rental fees; Kim Farmer will research county courthouse use fees; Laura Ratcliffe will compile zoning application, conditional use, variance and amendment application fees and provide a VCWA update. The committee will reconvene Oct. 10 to review collected information.
The minutes record a discussion that business licenses generate approximately $60,000 annually for the town; the committee noted some businesses may not realize they must obtain a town business license because the county does not charge one. The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
