A parent urged the Lincoln K-12 Schools board to convene a special public meeting to address what she called prolonged bullying of her son, Garrett, after he received out-of-school suspension following an altercation at a school football game, the parent said during public comment.
"The unrelenting bullying he is experiencing at the hands of his tormentor" has caused significant emotional distress and disrupted learning, the parent said, noting she plans to provide two letters — including one dated 09/09/2024 — and a copy of the written statement she read to the board. She cited board policy 3225 on harassment and asked the board to hold a public meeting so the issue can be addressed openly.
Garrett's grandmother also spoke, saying the school gave her grandson an out-of-school suspension after he reacted to repeated harassment and criticizing what she described as a pattern of punishing victims. "When this school is gonna stop reinforcing the bullying and punishing the victims," she asked the board.
Another commenter requested that parents be notified of any follow-up meetings addressing incidents such as bullying or threats, saying, "If there's gonna be a meeting held next week over all this stuff ... I wanna know about it." The parent said she provided copies of her letters and requested a special public board meeting rather than a private session.
The transcript shows no formal board response or recorded action on the parent's request during the portion of the meeting provided. The parent emphasized she was not asking the board to excuse her son's reaction but to address the underlying harassment and to provide a public forum for concerned families.
