Council unanimously approves rezoning for truck garage, discontinues Channel 13 and OKs multiple routine items

The Thomasville City Council on May 20 voted unanimously on a set of motions ranging from a land-use rezoning to service and ordinance changes.
Rezoning: The council approved rezoning request Z-24-05 for 428 Triad Boulevard, changing the property from C-2 Highway Commercial to CZ-M-2 Heavy Industrial with a conditional use limiting it to operation as a garage for semi-trucks, trailer parking and a small office. Planning Director Chuck George told Council the Planning Board had unanimously recommended approval, and Carmen Selgado, representing the applicant family, said the intent is to use the lot primarily for truck parking. Council Member Doug Hunt moved to approve the rezoning; Council Member JacQuez Johnson seconded and the motion passed 7-0.
Channel 13: Deputy City Manager Eddie Bowling asked Council to discontinue the City’s Channel 13 cable broadcast after the cable provider, Spectrum, said households would need to subscribe to keep the channel and a planned server move faced delays. Bowling said the City is now streaming council meetings on Facebook Live, the City website and YouTube; discontinuing the cable service will save $28,944 per year and avoid a roughly $35,000 server purchase this year. Council Member Hunter Thrift moved to discontinue the service; Council Member Doug Hunt seconded. Motion passed 7-0.
Consent and ordinances: The Council approved the consent agenda, which included authorization for a NC GHSP traffic safety grant that funds 70% of the salary for one traffic safety officer, a resolution calling a public hearing for annexation of an approximate 12-acre tract ("Emma's Place") on June 17, a first-amendment to the School Resource Officer agreement to provide police access to campus cameras, and a National Night Out road-closure ordinance. Police Chief Dustin Carter requested and Council approved an amendment to the Traffic & Vehicle Ordinances to add three off-street public parking lots at 52 E. Main Street, 25 Salem Street and 6 Trade Street; that motion also passed 7-0.
All motions brought during the meeting passed by unanimous votes of the seven council members present. Several members expressed appreciation for staff reports and noted the items will move into their respective implementation phases or upcoming hearings.
