Concord Cultural Council working group raises small-grant awards and simplifies eligibility

A subcommittee of the Concord Cultural Council met via Zoom on June 24, 2026, and agreed to streamline its FY26 small grant guidelines, raising the award range and clarifying eligibility to better reach individual artists.

The working group, led by Chair Leda Zimmerman, revised language to maintain compliance with Massachusetts Cultural Council requirements while removing specific restrictions that had discouraged some applicants. The group discussed eliminating references to out-of-town applicants and economic enhancement requirements, simplifying descriptions for "new and emerging artists," and increasing award amounts from $150–$500 to $200–$800. Members also discussed prioritizing applicants who have not received Council funding in the past three years to broaden distribution.

Pianist and previous grant recipient Tanya Gailus described application barriers faced by individual artists and urged the subcommittee to ensure the guidelines are accessible to solo practitioners. Member Jack Megan emphasized general grantmaking practices and the importance of visibility for Council-supported projects. The group agreed these priorities should guide the final wording.

The committee began, but did not complete, revisions to the Cultural District Grants. Members agreed to continue that discussion at a follow-up meeting and to present both the revised small-grant guidelines and Cultural District recommendations to the full Concord Cultural Council in July.
