Platte County approves VAWA salary‑reimbursement MOU; prosecutor defends longtime grant funding

Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahn, who appeared before the commission, said Platte County has received the VAWA grant for roughly 20 consecutive years. Zahn told commissioners that the federal grant pays "a fairly small portion"—he said "less than 20%"—of a prosecutor's salary and that the county funds the remaining roughly 80 percent. He said the grant award had been anticipated and the funds were already accounted for in the county budget.
During the item, an exchange between the presiding commissioner and Zahn touched on prior communications about the county budget. The commissioner said the prosecutor had not engaged with the commission prior to the budget approval; Zahn responded that he had offered to meet and was willing to discuss the matter.
The motion to approve the MOU was moved, seconded and carried by unanimous roll call (3–0). Zahn thanked the commission for its support.
